What is good my fellow Music Enthusiasts, Musicians, Producers, Young Artists, Rappers, Home Studios, Singers, Songwriters, and Beat Makers alike. I am back with yet another resource to challenge your growth.
There are a lot of songs being played on the radio that are saying the same things... I hear a lot of shallow, safe lyrics that please the crowd & focus on entertainment - entertainment is HUGE, so don't get me wrong there - but that's where it ends... I hear too many young artists thinking all they've got to do is get discovered and signed to a major label in order to make it...
But what is your purpose? Why do you create music? Who needs to hear what you have to say? Do you really need what you think you want?
Purpose - What is it:
Let me guess:
One of the first music videos you saw had to do with a rapper throwing money "making it rain," am I right?
This is the case with most Hollywood influences. Even if it wasn't, most of us have been spoon fed this money chasing mentality - when in reality, most signed artists in this position don't see half of their so called "dollar signs."
I'm not hating on those who have successful careers with major labels - there are a lot of great things that can impact the world when someone of great responsibility uses their platform intentionally and consciously for greatness.
But if the only thing driving you is money, there will never be enough of it. "Some money always comes with a price" - Andy Mineo.
I can't tell you how many times the response is the same when I ask a seasoned individual what they learned in life / wish they had when they were younger:
"Money isn't everything. I wish I would have spent more time with my family in the hard times..." or "When I had money, I felt that there was always something missing. Like the chase was never over or satisfied..."
And other responses from elders who have witnessed the evil of chasing money tear other families apart:
"I knew a family who had tons of money, more than I'd ever imagined in my life, but they were always so miserable and had never ending health problems..."
Purpose - Find a need & Meet it:
I've said it a thousand times & I'll say it another thousand times:
Music is a mission where people care about people who care about people...
Therefore, find a need - study the market - and meet that need - give more than you take.
Have a purpose that pursues something greater than being rich.
This video of Key & Peele is just hilarious!
I've found my purpose in music, specifically continuing to learn everything I can and teach what I can to young artists serious about jumping into the music industry - or life - with a new lens, viewing the world as a place to be the change rather than wait for the change... That's only part of it though...
I've decided to cook up a fun GIF driven blog to explain a little more about what I do. Stay tuned for that Thursday morning.
What's your purpose? Comment below, I'd love to hear about it. If you aren't sure, let's brainstorm it together!
