What is good my fellow Musicians, Producers, Young Artists, Rappers, Home Studios, Singers, Songwriters, and Beat Makers alike. I am back with yet another resource to challenge your growth.
I recently mixed a song from a producer friend of mine. One thing that helped improve the quality was having the track outs. Don't get me wrong, I've leased some great beats with a single WAV file and still been able to mix them to sound better, but there is nothing like having a tracked out beat...
I wrote an article awhile back explaining what STEMs or Track Outs are - read that article here.
"Every song needs to be mixed and critiqued..."
I get it. We're proud of the work we've done. Sometimes there's a fear of rejection from others when they critique the hard work we've spent hours, weeks, months, years on... To admit that we aren't perfect and that our mixing skills might be lacking isn't easy, but that's the only way to improve - by having humility.
Who knows. Maybe the GIF above is really what's happening when the producer is cooking up the beat - that might explain the need for a second ear on the mix anyways. I personally loved this beat just the way it was but noticed the bass was clipping, so in order for me to be proud of the song I was going to be putting out for the world to hear me on, I needed to make some detailed adjustments. Now I love the beat even better. The Producer made a good track - I just emphasized the good and made it greater, with a clear and fresh set of ears.
Why Track Outs Are Such a Big Deal:
Track outs give the artist or mixing engineer more control over the overall mix. The beat may sound good just the way it is, but there are cases 99% of the time where something could be dropped, doubled, panned, widened, EQ'd, or adjusted for the artist's taste. Unfortunately, these detailed adjustments aren't as easy or are even impossible without track outs.
Since I have a sound I like as an artist, I want to reflect that sound across the board or continue improving that sound as I go. I've learned that it is easier to do this only with track outs.
Some of the greatest artists you like and hear on the radio had a mixing engineer that required track outs in order to create that new or signature sound that you love so much. They also had several people working together to mix and master the song to near perfection.
With that said,
I Won't Lease Another Beat without Track Outs...
