What is good my fellow Musicians, Producers, Young Artists, Rappers, Home Studios, Singers, Songwriters, and Beat Makers alike. I am back with yet another resource to challenge your growth.
Many of you know, I've been teaching classes with young artists who are interested in learning about music business, music production, music theory, and everything there is to know about music. There has been a common theme I have been teaching them all about, which has helped me the most as a musician in this day and age...
We could make a long list of pros and cons to gear on top of gear on top of gear, but not today.
And simply - People.
Now before you go all Ron Swanson on me - I do love his character - hear me out real quick.
There are a ton of things I could list that have been extremely helpful in my life, but people have been the most helpful.
I used to have a difficult time trusting others. In fact, I got to a point in my life where I didn't care much to share my hopes and dreams with anyone else but my notebook. Every time I spoke about my dreams and vision for life it seemed I got opposition and rejection from all sides. I shut down for a while and even went through a season of depression.
"But then I had a Change of Heart..."
I was at the grocery store one day - gotta eat and do life still - and developed a friendship with one of the cashiers. A few weeks went by and I realized something - not everyone is as negative as the people I was hanging out with. Not everyone wants to see me fail.
I wrote another article last week talking about friendships and how to approach burning bridges because quite frankly, it has to be done sometimes. Check that article out here.
Like Minded People:
It only took one person to open my eyes to the fact that I needed to have a change in my mindset. I was going around expecting everyone to be negative, to be evil, to not care. I know some other people that walk around with this chip on their shoulder - we can all spot them out in a crowd like bad khakis with an oversized shirt. So you can imagine my frustration of being like that, but being stuck in a rut and needing help in my change of "appearance" so to speak.
So everyday I went to the store, I made it a point to smile at somebody new and go to the cashier that always treated me well. Then I would slowly start smiling and even greeting other people each time I went to the store. I had never felt so respected and acknowledged in my life.
I noticed this changing the attitude of others around me - people that were completely shut off like me were beginning to be recognizable and interactive. When I shared interest in what they had going on in their lives, they would reciprocate interest in what I'm doing in music as well as my passion for empowering youth. So what was I missing this whole time?
Living like Zombies:
I had to make a decision. Did I want to continue living like a Zombie, emotionless, careless, isolated or did I want to make my dreams happen, help others, pursue a life rather than a rat race?
So next, I took a leap of faith. I launched 15Mill Music™, I started reaching out to others to mix and improve the quality of their music, I followed, liked, shared, featured, and talked with other musicians and people I want to empower on social media, I found Young Artist Society and threw myself out there to begin doing what I love.
Sadly, I know there are others living like Zombies but others are not. Being somebody that cares about people has brought more support than I could have ever imagined. And that is the common theme I teach my students - people care about people who care about people. Give it a try - you might just meet someone you need to know to get your dream to the next step.
If you've known me for a while, you will know that I have a passion for empowering, sharing resources and encouraging others to grow in their craft.
