What is good my fellow Musicians, Producers, Young Artists, Rappers, Home Studios, Singers, Songwriters, and Beat Makers alike.
I was mentoring a class of bright young artists yesterday about the fundamentals of music business. The first prompt was "Who is your favorite artist?" There were many answers and these led to more questions until we got to the bottom of this whole thing. What was it you ask? The why of it all...
Woah Woah Woah! Not so fast! Before we get into that, there was a process to breaking things down that led us to identify the "Why" as well as these other fundamentals, equally as important.
Keep in mind, these young artists came up with these answers with no help other than the deeper diving questions I tend to lay heavily into.
How did your favorite artists get to where they're at today?
And of course, the first fundamental they came up with was Money $$$. "Get that Money!"
How did they "Get that Money?"
"By being well known..."
How did they get to be well known?
"Money... Radio, Viral songs, Hard Work... They release on a schedule, people talk about them..."
How did you hear about them?
The answer trended as friends and referrals being the top way they've found out about other artists they like. Other answers also included radio preferences, genre preferences, soundcloud, social media, as well as features of other artists on their stuff or on other artist's work.
Why is that important to know?
"To get that MONEY!!!"
Is it really all about the money?
"well, yes and no..." I had them clarify what they meant. "That's how they make their living..."
How do they make a Living doing music?
"Well, being well known, radio, releasing music they're good at, people liking their music, tours are huge, movies..."
If an artists didn't have good sounding music, would you listen to them again?
"Nooooo!!!" That was interesting to me.
What makes you want to listen to them again?
"If there is a good message, good beat, if I can relate to it, it makes me pumped and turn-up..."
So there's more to music than the money?
They agreed. Because the main subject they are learning is beat production, on top of other basic music industry info for starters, I felt this was an important idea to explore in order to take them deeper into the business and understanding behind the scenes of music...
If you're all about the money then, will people listen to you?
"Maybe..." I also asked, "If you release terrible quality music, will people listen to you? You want the money but are you going to get it?" They replied "no."
What makes your favorite artist so attractive to you?
I'm glad this didn't get interpreted the wrong way... They responded, "I like who they are as a person, where they came from, why they write music, their consistency, their beats..."
BINGO! You are young artists; does this apply to you?
The 10 Fundamentals of your Favorite Artists:
Music fundamentals that make your favorite artists your favorite artists:
- Good Message in the Lyrics
- Good Music and Beats
- Quality Sound
- Viral Songs
- Featuring on & of Others Works
- Being Well Known & Consistent
- Releasing Schedule (1 year - 6 months)
- Friends & Referrals
- Presence on Social Media
- Going on Tours
- Catering to their Audience
- Being New & Different
- Having Integrity in their Character
- Working Hard to Earn their Living & Respect
Summing it up in 4 Statements:
- The Music industry is not easy... It is hard work, requires patience, & consistency...
- Don't procrastinate... If you don't release good music, you agreed that people won't listen...
- Have a good Message... Show people that you care; give them a reason to care...
- You are held to these same standards in this class, the standards you came up with for your favorite artists...
I asked them, "You all agree to this... If I wrote a contract and had everyone in here sign it, would you uphold your part of the deal? If you get an opportunity to fulfill these standards and grow your career, will you do it?"
Some said "Yes" but most said "Probably..."
"There are no probably-s in contracts. Standards are set and you are expected to meet them. If you probably meet them, you probably won't get another contract... You probably won't be doing much in the music industry. Unless you aren't meeting the standards, because you're exceeding them..."
The Why of it All:
This is important because it isn't just about the music industry; we're preparing them for the real world, the business world, college, contracts, adulthood, relationships, etc. Knowing why you do something or why you like something is essential. You need to know what you stand for, who you stand by, who you want to be, who you want around you, and why these things are important...
Every single young artist narrowed down their "Why are they your favorite artist," even though it was uncomfortable at times, to having a good message.
