What is good my fellow Musicians, Producers, Young Artists, Rappers, Home Studios, Singers, Songwriters, and Beat Makers alike. I am back with yet another resource to challenge your growth.
I was talking with some great friends, business partners, and men of faith this past week which inspired me to consider this topic. Whether you have a spiritual foundation or not, this topic applies to all music. Music is on the forefront of culture, the headlines of influence, the frontline of battle...
Not Every Lyric will make the Cut:
It can't be denied that music influences culture. In fact, music is probably the greatest influencer of all time, especially in today's next generation of artists.
I don't intend to hate on lyrics that use profanity or aren't constantly deeper in meaning; I think there is a purpose and time for all of that. But I am saying that lyrics need to be intentional, with mission in mind:
I wrote another article last week about this. We need to consider the message we are sending people and who we are trying to send our message to. Many will argue that music in this day and age sends a message of violence and objectification. I beg to differ. Others will say it sends a message of hypocrisy and glorification. Regardless of where you stand between these views - and I'm sure there are many - as an artist, a decision needs to be made about the intentions of the lyrics you write.
Your Music Career - Frontlines of Culture:
Who is your favorite superhero? I wouldn't say he's my favorite but I agree with this quote from Spiderman:
With great power comes great responsibility...
Instill this into your minds, artists. You either are, have been, or will be on the frontlines. It is just a matter of time. And if you are doing what I am doing, personally "digging trenches" with youth deep inside the culture, you will understand that every line of contact is an opportunity to win the heart of the culture. And if you are trying to make music your career, you will be considering plays on the radio, social media, concerts, and other aspects of the business. You will be hit with temptations beyond belief... And this is essential to understand so you continue to permeate the culture with a fresh mind rather than a distorted one...
If you are struggling to be intentional as you write deeper, meaningful lyrics, may I give you some foundations to help you grow and be propelled on this journey?
- Consider your audience
- Consider their daily struggles
- Consider your neighbor's life
- Consider how we are all different yet relatable
- Watch people - Sit at a coffee shop and just watch people
- Go out of your way to make somebodies day
- Ask people about their interests
- Learn other people's life stories and write a song about them
- Dream a little - Imagine how your music can change the world
- Ask for help - Ask for unfiltered feedback
- Have an open mind to listen but a pen and pad to stand for your beliefs
