What is good my fellow Musicians, Producers, Young Artists, Rappers, Home Studios, Singers, Songwriters, and Beat Makers alike. I am back with yet another resource to challenge your growth.
I had always heard about this mysterious concept. "Side Chain, Side Chain, Side Chain..." But I could not find anyone that could give me clear instructions on how to side chain. If you've run into this issue, I hope I can clear some things up for you right now...
I recently became friends with Will Borza, LA Recordist vlogger and mastering engineer with Double Hook Records, assistant to legendary master of masters Howie Weinberg, and facilitator of the Analog Mob facebook group where we have great discussions about mixing, mastering, & everything music. I recommending checking these guys out - always surround yourself with amazing individuals that can challenge you to be better.
I had been following Will's vlog for a while and was intrigued by his techniques. So I reached out and joined the Analog Mob.
"Hey Will. Can you explain to me how to Side Chain???"
And bam... It was like the universe had opened up and displayed shapes and colors I never knew existed before.
The concept of Side Chaining as never explained before:
- Side chaining is a process that compresses your bass instrument every time the kick hits.
- Side chaining prevents your kick from sounding muffled by maintaining power to the kick while moving other bass frequencies out of the way.
- For this process, the kick drum is routed to a compressor on the bass track/bus which is enabled to to receive the external signal from the kick.
- Every time the kick hits, the bass will be compressed in the amount you specify to make room from the kick to cut through the mix.
Here is a diagram of this routing process:
How Side Chaining Change my Life:
Thanks to Will's help, my life will never be the same!
My mixes punch through like nobodies business and I couldn't be happier to listen back and hear the power of the kick while still maintaining that 808 rumble. I can't look at another song or mix the same.
